Tensions between India and Pakistan have heightened after a senior Pakistani official stated that Islamabad has received “credible information” suggesting that New Delhi will take military action against Pakistan within the next 24-36 hours.
Pakistani Information Minister Attaullah Tarar made the claim early Wednesday, stating, “Pakistan has credible information that India intends to take military action against Pakistan in the next 24-36 hours.”
Tarar’s comments follow a recent attack in Pahalgam, in Indian-administered Kashmir, where at least 26 tourists were killed in a terrorist assault. India has accused Pakistan of being involved in the attack, a claim that Pakistan has denied. Pakistan has called for a neutral investigation into the incident.
Kashmir, a region contested by both India and Pakistan, remains one of the world’s most volatile conflict zones. The territory has been the focal point of three wars between the two nuclear-armed countries since their independence from Britain nearly 80 years ago. The region is divided by the Line of Control, a de facto border.
The recent attack in Kashmir has fueled anger in India, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is facing significant domestic pressure to take military action. India previously carried out airstrikes against Pakistan in 2019 in retaliation for an insurgent attack on Indian paramilitary forces in Kashmir. That strike marked the first incursion into Pakistani territory since the 1971 war between the two countries.
The ongoing situation has raised concerns that India may launch a similar response following the latest attack. In a recent speech, Modi pledged to pursue those responsible for the massacre “to the ends of the earth,” further escalating tensions between the two nations.
In response to the potential for military action, Tarar warned that any military aggression by India would be met with “confidence and determination” by Pakistan.
