The White House mocked former Vice President Kamala Harris’s speech Thursday, in which she attacked President Donald Trump, during her first major public comeback since her loss in the November election.

“I think I speak for everyone at the White House: We encourage Kamala Harris to continue speaking,” Trump spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt quipped at the end of a press conference.

After several months away from the public eye, Harris spoke at a gala in San Francisco, where she warned that the “checks and balances” that sustain American democracy have “begun to give way” due to the current president’s administration.

“Always remember, this country is ours. It doesn’t belong to whoever’s in the White House. It belongs to you. It belongs to us. It belongs to us, the people,” she declared.

Her reappearance coincides with growing rumors about a possible candidacy for governor of California, her home state.

Harris, the first woman to serve as Vice President of the United States, assumed the Democratic presidential nomination to replace Joe Biden in the midst of the election campaign, but was defeated by Trump at the polls on November 5.
