- ▪ Aaron Kosminski was identified as Jack the Ripper through a 100% DNA match from a crime scene shawl.
- ▪ Historian Russell Edwards led the investigation and confirmed the findings.
- ▪ A DNA sample from Kosminski’s great-great-grandniece enabled the breakthrough.
London’s infamous serial killer, long known only as Jack the Ripper, has now (with almost a 99.9% probability) been unmasked. Historian Russell Edwards asserts that DNA evidence from a shawl connected to the murder of Catherine Eddowes (one of the victims) has resulted in a 100% match to Aaron Kosminski—a Polish immigrant and long-suspected resident of Whitechapel.
Kosminski, who arrived in England in 1881 with his brother and later worked as a barber, was 23 at the time of the notorious murders. He was suffering from schizophrenia and spent his final years in an asylum before dying in 1919.
The breakthrough came when a DNA sample provided by the great-great-granddaughter of Kosminski’s oldest brother confirmed his identity.
Jack the Ripper, also referred to as the “Whitechapel Murderer” or “Leather Apron,” terrorized London between August and November 1888, brutally killing at least five women. His grisly modus operandi—involving throat slashing and organ removal—has kept the mystery alive for over a century.
Edwards has now enlisted legal counsel and submitted a request to the Attorney General for permission to bring the case before Britain’s High Court for a formal inquest. Descendants of both Catherine Eddowes and Aaron Kosminski support this move, calling for justice and the official naming of the true culprit.
“The name Jack the Ripper has become sensationalized. It has gone down in history as this famous character,” Karen Miller, the great-great-great-granddaughter of Eddowes, told the Mail.
“What about the real name of the person who did this? Having the real person legally named in a court, which can consider all the evidence, would be a form of justice for the victims. We have got the proof. Now, we need this inquest to legally name the killer.”
