In a landmark move, Estonia has made a significant breakthrough in education by becoming the first country in the world to officially integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into its classrooms.
This arises from a strategic collaboration with OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPT, to implement ‘ChatGPT Edu‘, a customized version of the famous AI model, designed specifically for the educational environment.
The Estonian government has confirmed that from September 2025, all secondary school students and teachers in the country will have access to this tool.
Initial implementation and project scope
The implementation of ‘ChatGPT Edu’ will begin with 10th and 11th grade students, with a primary emphasis on secondary education. This development is part of the AI Leap 2025 initiative, which aims to incorporate artificial intelligence technologies into the education system, allowing students and teachers to access advanced resources to improve teaching and learning.
This tool promises to be a powerful ally for both students and teachers, as it will not only improve teaching and learning efficiency, but will also optimize the administrative burden on teachers.
According to Kristina Kallas, Estonia’s Minister of Education and Research, “Estonia’s competitiveness depends on how well we can prepare young people for the era of artificial intelligence,” stressing the importance of this development for the country’s future.
Benefits of educational work with AI
Teachers will benefit from reducing the time spent on repetitive tasks, such as marking assignments and organizing materials, allowing them to focus on direct interaction with students and teaching more complex skills such as critical thinking and creativity.
This project is part of a broader vision of the Estonian government, which seeks to position the country as a leader in technological innovation and in preparing its citizens for the challenges of the future. The use of AI in education also responds to the need to strengthen Estonia’s competitiveness in an increasingly digitalized world.
Estonia, a spearhead
Estonia is already known for its advancement in digitalisation through initiatives such as e-Estonia, which transformed public administration. With the move to’AI Leap 2025′, the country continues to be at the forefront of integrating technology into everyday life.
In Estonia, one in four citizens has an active ChatGPT account, and a large part of the interactions are related to the educational field, such as tutoring, programming and writing, proving that the move towards implementing ‘ChatGPT Edu’ is not just a technological advancement, but a natural extension of the population’s daily use of AI.
