Cambridge, MA – May 24, 2025 — Emergency responders were called to the Massachusetts Avenue Bridge shortly after midnight Saturday following reports that two students attempted to swim across the Charles River.
The incident took place around 2 a.m. when the students entered the river near the bridge connecting Cambridge and Boston. Witnesses alerted authorities after spotting the swimmers struggling in the cold water.
Emergency crews from both cities, including divers and rescue boats, responded quickly. One of the swimmers was pulled from the water by rescue teams and treated at the scene for symptoms of hypothermia. The second student managed to reach the riverbank without assistance and was later located by responders.
Both students were transported to a local hospital. Officials stated that their injuries were not life-threatening and that they are expected to recover.
Authorities have not released the identities of the individuals involved or confirmed their university affiliation. The bridge was temporarily closed during the emergency response and has since reopened.
Cambridge Fire Department issued a reminder about the dangers of swimming in the Charles River, particularly at night, citing strong currents, low temperatures, and limited visibility.
The incident remains under investigation. No charges have been filed at this time.
